PSD versus a flattened image

A PSD can contain independent layers, type, masks, styles and other editing information. A flattened JPEG generally retains the rendered pixels rather than separate editable components. PSB is a large-document Photoshop format that the project also supports.

PhotoCraft implements PSD support from public format specifications. Reading and writing the format does not establish complete fidelity for every Photoshop-specific feature or complex document.

What to check after opening

Inspect both the canvas and Layers panel. Check editable type, mask edges, blend modes and layer styles against the expected document. Installed fonts affect text appearance, so the same file can look different across systems with different fonts.

Pay particular attention to smart objects, adjustments and effects in handoff documents. Use the project’s documented capabilities and test information alongside your own file checks rather than relying on a single compatibility percentage.

Edit a copy and verify the round trip

Duplicate the source document before editing and save the result under a new filename. Keep an editable working file. If Photoshop or another application will consume the result, reopen it there and compare layers and rendering.

The project explicitly distinguishes PhotoCraft document re-saving from a byte-identical PSD round trip. Similar appearance, identical bytes and complete feature preservation are different acceptance criteria.

Export when you are ready to share

Choose PNG when you need transparency or consider JPEG for ordinary photographic delivery. Export usually combines the working content into a finished image and should not replace the document you need for future editing.

Color profiles, bit depth and the destination platform affect export choices. For important work, retain the original, an editable version and the delivery image so you can review or continue the project.
